For poor game play, should athletes be punished by their coaches by having them perform conditiong drills after the game? (ex. running, wind sprints etc.) |

I think it all depends on there age. younger children should not be punished in any way, however in a competitve sport in college or higher should so they learn better. |

I am not a huge believer in having people run for punishment. I think it sends a negative message that running is bad and is for punishment instead of for fun. We need to keep people exercising later and not have that stigma of punishment on exercise. I think there are better avenues to take than to "punish" an individual. |

I think having athletes condition due to poor game play is a terrible idea for any age group. I'm a college athlete, and I'm really against coaches using running as punishment. My coach had us before every practice perform basic skills like passing, and if the ball was not stopped, we ran to the endline and back. Thus, we all were so focused on stopping the ball and making sure we didn't run that we started cheating and passing the ball to our partner as lightly and easily as possible. Therefore, we were not improving our passes at all. Athletes should want to improve and condition because they want to, not because they have to. I don't mind coaches saying like run a mile before practice, but when they use running as a punishment...it gets a little crazy. Coaches should run their athletes before or after practice just so that thei team's endurance improves. When coaches use running as punishment, the team will find a way to not get punished, and they will grow to hate any type of running and conditioning. |
