With more emphasis on strength training these days, what would be an ideal age or grade to start lifting? |

I started to lift in high school around the age of 16. I have heard that is a good age to wait because bones are starting to become much stronger. However, the human body is not done growing. |

I started to lift late 8th grade/ beginning of 9th grade so around the age of 14. I agree with John though, in the regards to children lifting too young can cause injury to the persons body. I have also heard that lifting too early can cause growth stunts because the body is not fully developed at that point. I believe I may have started too young but I do feel a reasonable age to begin lifting weights would be 15, more close to 16. Mainly because this is usually when adolescents begin competing in more serious activities / athletics. |

I don't necessarily have an age, but I feel that after puberty would be the best time to start lifting weights. Any earlier than that doesn't seem appropriate. |

I started to lift weights when I recieved my weight bench at 12 and a half. I dedicated myself and lifted hard until present day, and I am almost 21 now. I was in the process of puberty and I think benefits have come out of my early start. I never grew very tall, but genetically I am challenged there. I am unsure whether weightlifting young affected my height pattern. |

I think lifting during or after puberty is the right time to start lifting. I think anytime before that would not be benefical to the individual and could injure the individual in the long run. |

In my opinion the right age to start lifting would be around 6th grade. At that age the student is getting ready to get into competitive interscholastic sports and needs to be athletic enough and strong enough to compete. The emphasis at this age should not be on strenght, but rather form. The muscle and strenght will come with time. |

I believe that if you start too young you will burn yourself out. As soon as you get to high school, about ninth grade or so would be the perfect time to start lifting. |

Some light lifting pre high school would be ok but once in 9th grade start lifting for the sport. |

I agree with what Jennifer said. The body needs time to develop and weight lifting before puberty could cause problems when they get older. They also may have problems earlier in life with joints and other such areas. I started lifting when I was in 9th grade and I wish I had someone to show me and introduce me to weight training at an earlier age. I guess the age limit would depend on the parents, participant involved and the doctors opinion. |

I'd say introduce it in 8th grade, and if people are interested, then they could take a full class in 9th grade. Focus on good form/no max lifts when in junior high. |

I strongly believe that the earliest a kid should begin lifting is fifteen years old. Weight lifting is a very serious thing and if not done right you can severely injure yourself. They should begin lifting on a light level and learn under an adult who knows what they are doing. |

I think the appropriate time to begin weight training is 9th grade because that is when most bodies have finished growing and a child needs to fill out their body structure. |
