Coaches are under an extreme amount of pressure today to win. Practice times are limited and expectations are high. I truly believe the best role model for athletes is one who practices what they preach. I always tell my athletes that academics comes before athletics. If they have to miss portions of practice in order to maintain their studies, then so be it. Even if the big game is on the line. I keep my word. The career of most student-athletes will end at the high school level, so being responsible and accountable are LIFE skills which reach far beyond athletics. The more real you are with your players the more respect they have for you and your program. So in answer to your question T - I say that most coaches are already assuming the roles of both educator and coach. |
