There has been some talk in the past years at my high school, that if a student participates in three different varsity sports during the academic school year, that he/she will not have to participate in Physical Education class. What does everyone think about this issue?

I feel that students should absolutely participate in PE class, no matter how many sports they are involved in. Although I do feel its great that students are being physically active in their sports, I just don't feel it's enough. PE class isn't just for the idea of being active, it's also for learning the what, why, and how aspects of physical activity in every day life. |

I went to a high school similar to that situation. Only the rule was, if you participated in any sport at all whether it be football, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading or even band. I was an athlete in high school and it was looked down upon by your peers if you were an athlete in a PE class. I know a few people that felt threatened in PE when any athlete was in their class. Now looking back, I really don't agree with athletes skipping out on a PE class at all. I think everyone should have to participate in class, athlete or not. It is wonderful that students are involved in extra-curricular activities but I agree with Erica, it's just not enough. Great choice of topic! This is a subject that I feel very strongly about and I will argue it into the ground if necessary. |

Having done it both ways, I think three varsity sports makes up for PE. But as a PE teacher I would love to have such diverse athletes in PE as role models and for the others to see how they match up with them. I had a wrestling class in college and the schools starting QB (this was the Univ of Fla) came in and I wrestled him. I was able to gauge my athletic abiltity against his. It can all be positive but I think varsity athletics is a great indicator of a physically educated person and in some ways more so. |

I think a student can benefit from a PE class whether they participate in a sport or not. I think it is valuable to their health and well being. Especially if the student only plays one sport for one season, they might not remain active in the off season. It is also beneficial to have a student athlete in your classroom to act as a role model and demonstrate appropriate skills in the sport they participate in. |
