I coach a 14U baseball team that has new members this year. Some of my other players have been playing together for up to 5 years now. Would incorporating team building activities help make the new team members feel comfortable quicker, or is it just one of things that you should just let run it's course? Any input is appreciated. |

I don't think that doing team building activities would hurt, if anything they would probably help. But an important factor would be the older team members. If they're not into it that attitude would be translated in the newer players too. So if you could talk to the older players and make sure they're on board with that idea, then go for it. I think it would be a great time for the newer players to build relationships with the other players strengthening the team bond. |

Team building activities are great for any team that has been together for multiple seasons or just formed last week. The key is to make sure the activity allows for the new players to bond with the returning players. I am a coach for a college hockey team. Just last week we had a team building activity that had the players go on a photo scavenger hunt. Each group of players had a list of 30 items to find in a given amount of time. Once the time was up, we all got together on campus and viewed each others photos. It was a great opportunity for the team to get to know each other in a fun atmosphere. |

I think that any type of team building activities to help the teamates become closer together, and to help build the trust is benefitial. Even since the players have played together for that long, it still helps everyone feel involved, and it brings the team together to help the teams overall performance. Bonding time is definately good as well since it gives the chance to bring together the members since most of the sports involve teamwork. |

I think team building exercises are great. Regardless, they can only help not hurt. I know i have played on many teams that may have not been the most skilled, the fact we got along together made us play up to our potential. |

I am actually taking a course in college right now that i based on team building activities. I think team building activities are a great tool for any team. It makes everyone get to know each other a lot quicker and makes everyone feel comfortable around one another. For baseball you could actually incorporate a game called warp speed. You give someone a tennis ball and that person says "hi my name is ___." That person then passes the ball to someone else. The person that catches the ball says "thanks _____, my name is _____." This is continues until everyone has received the ball. Once finished, you repeat the game and have everyone remember who they threw the ball to and what their name is by saying the persons name that they are throwing to. You can also add more balls after a while to make the game a little challenging and fun. Everyone has a great time and able to open up to one another. |

Team building exercises can never hurt. When I played sports in high school we always tried to be a big family because without your team you can't accomplish very much. I am also in a college course where team building is very important. We did an activity called "willow in the wind." You get a group of 7-13 people and one person in the middle. The person in the middle gives a command that they are going to fall and the circle catches them and pushes them around the circle. This exercise helps build trust and would help to bring the team closer. |
