In my Fitness for Education this past week we have been discussing the benefits and hazards to stretching. We learned that static stretching should be done after physical activity because otherwise you can actually be doing more harm to your muscles and body. Does anyone have any opinion or know anything else on this recent study? Does anyone have any special ways to incorporate dynamic stretching into the beginning of their classes or practices?

I know that static stretching does not cause more harm than it helps but it is an unecessary practice before an activity. Static stretching should be done everyday and each stretch should be held for 30 seconds to have the desired effect of increasing flexibility. Progressive dynamic stretching that mimics the movements that are associated with the following activity is probably the best thing because this not only allows the body to become familiar with the movents but this also promotes blood flow to the area and increases heart rate.
