Coaches take on many roles, the first being that they are the instructors. They teach their athletes how to perform skills and how and when to apply them. They also provide motivation and encouragement to their athletes to perform at their optimal level. At times they lend a shoulder for support in difficult times. Are there any other roles that coaches take on?

I agree with you completely that coaches must teach as well as motivate and encourage. However, one of the most important roles of a coach is sometimes forgotten, and that is that they are a role model for their athletes. This could be something as simple as using manners at a restaurant or something a little more complex like honesty and integrity. Overall, I feel that this is one of the most important roles that a coach plays for his athletes because he/she can single handedly create an atmosphere for a positive experience or on the other hand can drive an athlete away from a sport altogether.

Along with being a role model, I believe that coaches should act real in a respectable way in front of their players. Players want to see that their role model has real life issues just like them. It makes them feel more comfortable to be around the coach and allows them to open up more if they have a problem.

Coaches are not just building athletes, but they are building people. Many of the characteristics I have acquired from sports apply to my everyday life. We may not be able to be an athlete forever, but the things we learn as athletes will remain for a lifetime. So what I am getting at is that coaches need to help their players become better people, as well as athletes.
