When first starting out as a coach how can I make friends with the players while establishing myself as being in charge.

From start to finish, you must coach. If you're friends with a player what will that accomplish? Would being friends with them make them a better players? Focus on coaching and gaining respect from the players and the community you serving and everything else will follow.

Being their friend will not help you, to be frank. As Colleen mentioned, focus on the coaching part and show who you are a person. I am sure your players will respect you and some sort of bond will develop at some point in the season.

The most important thing is that the players respect you. If they respect you then they will like you. You are not there to hang out w/ the kids. You are there to teach them skills. It makes it easier if they like you, but that does not matter.

From experiencce, trying to be their friend makes things complicated. You have to first show them that you are in control so that they respect you. You can have fun with them but not so much become a friend.

you definitely want to be their coach first and foremost. if you don't establish this first, they will just walk over you and won't really learn anything from their sport. if you are their coach, showing them a mutual respect that you expect in return, them you will develop that friendship automatically.
