Can a team have too many captains? I know as a senior in high school my soccer team had 5 captains including myself. I felt as if some of the roles a captain plays was taken away from some of us because there were so many. It also seemed like some of the team wouldnt take us seriously because they thought the number of captains was a joke. What are some ideas on the number of captains a team should have> As a high school coach in my future, I will have to face this decision and would like some input on this issue.

yes a team can have too many captains. i think the ideal number is 2-3 for any team over 10 people really which is going to cover all teams. you don't want too many because of difference in opinions unless its a massive team. but only one isn't enough in high school too many personality conflicts. you need a good mix and a group that can keep each other in check well and guide the team.

Depending on the makeup of your team, you can even operate without official captains, instead allowing your natural leaders to become members of the "Captains' Council." It's a way to reward those who have taken a leadership role. Some groups comprise athletes who are very individualistic and resent being "captained" by peers. This idea works for such a team.

I agree there is such a thing as too many captains, however, I don't think you can say a team can only have X number of captains. All teams are different, therefore, the way they are led will be different. I am part of a team now that has 4 captains, and it is working out pretty well. We have one captain who is a goalie, one who is a defender, one midfielder, and one attacker. So each captain is sort of in charge of their part of the field.

I played field hockey in high school and now in college. My senior year of high school my team was assigned four captains, in which, I was the head captain and the other three were like the assistant captains. I thought four captains were too much, and it caused the team to be very disorganized. I thought it was disorganized because the assistant captains didn't know the limitations of their roles, so they basically forced me to do everything. In college, my freshman year we had two captains, and my sophomore year we had three captains. I thought both years the amount of captains we had was not problematic, and I thought they worked really well. My coach proposed a new idea for this coming season, which I completely disagree with. She wants to have a leadership committee, in which, three or four girls rotate in and out of the committee each week. The committee then meets with our coaches each week to discuss the team and any problems or concerns involving the team. Therefore, each game our coaches pick the captains for the game, so we have different captains all season. I think this will cause problems on our team because at practices we won't have anyone to lead. All in all, I think it is best for sports teams to have two to three captains.

I agree that there can be too many captains on a team. On the lacrosse team I play for now, we have 4 captains and only one is a true captain where the other three just have the title and do nothing else as a captain. In high school I was one of two captains and we both ran the practice and did the same amount of work rather than having more and captains slacking off with one doing all of the work.
