What do you think about the amount of practice time high school sports are allowed to have prior to the season openers? I feel coaches need more time with their players to better prepare them for the season. As a coach, I would love to have more than 2 weeks so I can feel better about their conditioning and play. Look at professional sports as an example, they get multiple weeks to practice and condition prior to the season. Why can's high school sports teams do the same> What are some thoughts on this?

Seth I completely agree with you. Two weeks is not enough time to prepare for a season opener, especially when you have high expectiations of you're team you would like all of the time you could get. This is when I would take you're captians or seniors and get them together and maybe they could hold a conditioning practice twice a week and the maybe a fundamental practice once a week. Even getting together previous alumni who have just graduated maybe they would give you a hand since you are not premitted to do so. But yes I do agree with you a coach should be allowed more time with there team before the season opener.

I agree with both of you. For example, in high school I played soccer, wrestled and ran track & field. I feel that the two weeks was not able to get our team in adequate shape. If there was an additional week before sports to have team practice would be extremelly ideal. Yes, captains can bring the team together. But, they are not going to want to find contacts of the upcoming freshman that want to play soccer. Also, students want to enjoy summer as long as possible until conditioning starts is also a problem for the captains to get all of his/her teammates together.

I agree with what all of you said. Coaches need more than two weeks to get their team ready for the season. I think Lauren made a good point, that captains or seniors should get the team together and do conditioning practices and work on fundamentals. This would benefit the coaches because their team would already be in shape and ready to start real practices. Also, the coach would not need to spend a lot of time going over fundamentals because the team would have been practicing preseason. All of that would help, but I would agree with you and say that high school sports should be allowed to have more than two weeks to practice before season openers to enhance the team's skills.
