If a high school student gets into legal trouble outside of school should that affect them participating on athletic teams?

Yes, it is a student athletes responsibility on and off to the field to abide by the rules given to them. If they choose not to do so they deserve a punishment.

To be more specific, the situation might be one where there could be a meeting between the student athlete, coach of their athletic team, parents of athlete, principal, superintendent or anyone else who is related to the issue to discuss proper action. sometimes they are small incidents that can still let an athlete participate in sports but also serve a punishment as well.

I think that this is a situation that could go one of two ways, you could sit the student down and listen to their side of the story and see if it was a one off and never going to happen again or you could just straight up punish them and make them serve a punishment by not letting them particiapate for a couple of games.

I believe that there should some kind of disciplinary action. If a kid gets in legal trouble, then they did something wrong and should not be handed a silver platter for their mistake. They need to realize that life is not easy and they need to work their way back on the team.

I feel that as an athlete, you have a responsibility to your teammates, coaches, and your school. By getting into trouble with the law, you are going against what you have been taught since day one. Athletics are a privilege and privileges can be taken away. So, I definitely feel as though if you do not uphold your responsibilities as an athlete, it should affect your status on a particular team.
