I was looking for some opinions on whether or not PE teachers should or should not encourage the use of lifting supplements for high school athletes. |

Supplements can be good and bad. I would not encourage any athlete to take supplements just because they may take one that is harmful and it may harm them. Then you possibly can become liable if the person is affected by the supplement. |

High school athletes do not need supplements. If someone did, however, insist on supplementing, protein is all that is necessary. High school athletes are going to make gains regardless of supplementation or not because they are still in a potent growing stage. Also, it is not always the healthiest of choices since they already have an elevated level of testosterone, etc. Protein is the safest choice for athletes wanting to supplement at the high school level. The steroid issue should go without saying. |

I think PE teachers should never recommend any kind of supplements to their students. Most supplements are unnatural and overload the body with vitamins and minerals. Any recommendation of supplements should be left to doctors and dieticians. |

PE teachers should never think about encouraging the use of supplements. In my opinion supplements are no different than performance enhancing drugs. I've been around it when I was in school and many athletes had kidney problems because they didn't use them properly. I've never used any type of supplement and benched over 400, squatted over 500, and deadlifted over 500 when I was in school and never touched a thing. There is no need for supplements in high school and PE teachers or coaches should not be recommending them. If one wants to make gains, start early and work hard. |

In some cases I feel it is ok to encourage athletes to take SAFE supplements if they are interested and planning on taking something no matter what. This way you can atleast hope that they will not take the next step and take something that may cause harm to their bodies |
