I found throughout my history as a student athlete that coaches have a tendency to select the best athlete on the team. The concern I have is whether thats the best approach. I found that this title provides the athlete with an ego that could lead to less sportmanship. I also noticed that there are athletes on the team that could fit the leadership skills with leading as an example. I was just curious which is better for selecting a leader. The best athlete or the one that best displays the qualities of a leader? |

To fill the leadership role, the athlete who best displays the qualities should be the captain. Though the best athlete may lead the team to victories in points or other statistical matters, the captain leads the team both on and off the field and/or court. |

Ideally, it would be best to have a team captain that is one of the best athletes on the team and a quality person off the court/field. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. One alternative option is to have the team members anonymously vote for a captain. This will enable the players to have an active role in choosing who they want to lead their team. |
