Say there is a student in your class that does not like gym class in general. Everyday he/she comes in and tells you they are not going to participate in gym class, how do you approach the student in a manner that is not negative and tell them they must participate to get the credit for that day? Also, how do you deal with the students that just stand around and say they have a medical problem, but will not present a doctors excuse? |

Have you tried asking the student what physical activities they do enjoy doing? I am sure that they can find something that they like doing. Not everybody likes to play sports, but maybe they like to talk to their friends, so then they walk and talk during the participation time. You have to realized that getting them moving is the primary goal. |

I think making a personal connection to the student who does not want to participate may help. A college professor of mine told our class about a student who did not want to ever participate. The way he got the student to participate was by making a personal connection with the student about the guitar. It can be about anything that the student is interested in even if it is outside of PE and school. As far as the student who says they have a medical problem...give them an ultimatum. Let them know they have a deadline to present a doctor's excuse or they will fail the class. Also,if you can find out what medical condition they have, perhaps involve them in a safe activity that will allow them to participate. |
