A major topic that has been brought to my attention is if student athletes should have to participate in physical eduation class the day of a game? I have mixed feelings about this because the coach in me wants to say let the student athletes sit out the day of a game because I do not want them to risk injury, However the teacher in me says that every student should participate in class regardless of a game that day. |

Student-athletes must complete course work in all classes to be eligible to participate in extra-curricular sports/activities. To modify the PE course work to accomondate each sports athletes would disrupt the daily class routine. As a PE teacher and track coach this situations is addressed early in the season. Our student-athlete knows that track meets days are training days and PE class work must be completed when assigned. This season 2 track athletes performed poorly on a pacer test during their 5th period class. (20 count) They told the sub they had a track meet and were going to take it easy. After class the sub told me what happened. Our travel plans for this meet allowed me to keep the kids in school and repeat the pacer test 7th period with their teacher. The test would be repeated or they would miss the meet. Their performance improved to a 77 count. Their PE teacher appreciated my support of her classroom activity. The parents, who I spoke with at the meet felt the athlete should be excused because of the meet. Though they did understand their efforts and recovery time should not affect their track performance. At the track meet 3 hours later (plenty of recovery time) both athletes triple jumped to their season and lifetime best efforts. Set your standard and expectations high and students will respond. |

Physical Education class is not just recess. The term student athlete means student comes first. Students learn skills that will allow them to remain active after graduation and stay healthy for life. Some condiderations can be made on perticipation levels but the learning goes on. |
