I am looking to teach elementary physical education in the near future. In my opinion I think competition in a necessary part of the class. I was wondering what some other opinions on this are, and if you think that competition should not be a big part in physical education class then how do you as a teacher motivate the students that want to compete at everything? |

That is a great question. I think you really have to be careful with competition in PE, because you have to think about the ultimate goal. Is PE to develop the traits and charecteristics necessary for competetive sport. Or is PE to develop a foundation for a lifetime of physical activity. Sometimes motivation is intrinsic and I think that you can ask students to compete against their own abilities. For example, if I am having students throw, then I challenge them to see if they can make 5 throws from a certain distance to a certain target. For those that the distance was too easy I have them move back, on the other hand if it is too hard I have them move forward. Either way I keep them engaged in the activity, I think you will find that your students will be motivated through the challenges that you give them. |

I agree that the ultimate goal is to develop a foundation for a lifetime of physical activity, but I also think whom better to teach students and children about competition than me. They cannot always learn it from parents, coaches, or what they see on television so I think they need to learn how to compete from somewhere. It may be that elementary school is to young for that, but I am still not sure where I stand on this and I am just giving some thoughts on it. |

I think kids are going to be competitive no matter what kindergarten through a senior in high school. I don't think it is necessary but I think there is no way to stop it. I know when I was in middle and high school I was always very competitive and if I wasn't then whatever activity we were doing wasn't fun to me and I was bored. Granted I think that competitiveness shouldn't be taken too far. Children who like competitiveness generally gravitate to other children in their class that like to be competitive as well. So I think being competitive in P.E. is a good thing. |

I feel that competition is important when participating in team sport activities, but is not neccessarily important when participating in lifetime and certain individual activities. Lifetime activities often have more of a social role in the development of children. This is a key element in lifetime activities. |
