As someone who is aspiring to be a high school coach, I was wondering how do other high school coaches handle the issue of weight management with their athletes. This is obviously a very touchy topic, and I am wondering whether it should even be brought up at all on the high school level. My personal belief is that on a high school level, maybe you can bring it up to the entire team, but don't single anybody out. I was just wondering how this issue was handled by other coaches out there. |

I am obviously not a coach yet, but i would have to agree with you as I am also an aspiring coach. You don't want to single anyone out, but at the same time you don't want a bunch of slobs running up and down the court, field, etc. I definately think weight is an issue though. |

Weight is a big issue in coaching, especially in sports where your weight matters (i.e. wrestling, pole vault, etc.) Weight loss should not be forced, but if it is needed and not unhealthy, it should be brought up. It is impermissable for a coach to require or support weight loss in a high school athlete, but if the athlete chooses to do it to become more competitive, then the athlete will do it. It is the coaches responsibility, however, to know what is healthy for the athlete and to ultimately look out for the athletes overall well-being. |

As a former wrestler I saw both sides of the weight loss game. Weight cutting isn't as big of a problem for wrestling now a days, because coaches and parents are more educated. Also, with the new rules on weight loss it prevents students from cutting a lot of weight in a short amount of time. I don't believe you should single any one person out, but I do think that coaches need to be educated in nutrition and weight management in order to help their athletes. |
