Has anyone used Icebreakers in PE classes and if so why do you think it's important to use them?

Yes, I have used Icebreakers in a P.E. Outdoor Pursuits class. I feel that Icebreakers are both very beneficial to the Teacher(s) and the students to help reduce the stress/anxiety levels amongst the class.

As an undergraduate student at Slippery Rock University, I’ve had to participate in many icebreaker games during several of my classes. In my opinion, using icebreakers in PE classes would be a great idea! As a teacher, it’s an easy way to create a positive group atmosphere and it will help your students relax. Also, it’s important to get your students to think outside the box, as well as helping people to get to know one another. I will most definitely use icebreakers when I become a PE teacher in the near future because it’s a great way to start off the new year!

I have used icebreakers in some of my classes. I think it is a great way for everyone to get to know each other and to get rid of some of the pressures in the classroom.

I use icebreakers as a part of my cooperative activities unit the first 2 weeks of school. Icebreakers allow students to begin to feel comfortable in class. If you think about it, some students hate the idea of having to participate in front of their peers. So, you do some ice breakers to make the students feel more comfortable. Name games are extremely important. If you have students saying "Hey, you" instead of the person's name, it automatically sets a tone that says to the student from their peer, "you're not important enough to you know your name." Even though that may be completely true, it still discourages that student from being a part of the class. As names are being learned and everyone is beginning to feel comfortable, I then start adding other elements to the activities, such as problem solving, so that I can teach my students how cooperative learning should and will take place in my classrooms. For example: communicate (both talk and listen), piggy back off of ideas, set mini-goals to achieve the larger goals, please and thank yous, etc. All of this is important, I feel, in creating an environment that students feel safe and comfortable in. If you set the cooperative tone from the start, I feel that we can accomplish that much more throughout the year.
So, simply put, icebreakers are an amazing idea for the first few days of school!

I personally have used ice breakers in class and I feel that it is a great way to get the class closer. It has allowed me to feel much more comfortable with my class and my class has felt more confident with me. You do need to know when to use them though. You can't just use them throughout the whole year. Icebreakers are the the most beneficial at the beginning of the year.
