A lot of universities and other recreations have plenty of good club teams. The problem with club teams are they do not always have a set head person. Does anyone have any suggestions on letting students run a team, when they are also athletes on that same team? It just does not seem to me like practices and things would run as smoothly. |

I would have to agree with you. A student athlete as a coach I think would be very complicated. During practice how would you coach and practice at the same time. Trying to build your skills as well as others would be hard. Plus, what happens at a game? How is the student going to participate in the game and coach at the same time? |

have someone run practice that knows the game and is also solid at their position. but also let them get in some practice too. I kinda do this with my fraternity's softball team, I usually start out running things during infield and whatever but I always make sure that I get in a few ground balls as wel. |

I think that a team would not be succesful with out having one person who makes the final descions that are best for the team. If a player were to be a "player coach" he/she may only decide to have their friends play in the game and maybe one of the better memebers of the team does not get in because they are not close with the "player coach." |

Being a player and coach can work. I play on a club rugby team at Slippery Rock University and we do not have a coach. Rather, every semester we vote for two captains. One for the backs and the other for the forwards, and the club has been using this system for many years. The two captains run the practices, but also partake in the drills so they can better themselves as well as the team. They also make the final decision on who starts and plays in the matches. However, sometimes issues do arise with how practice is run or who is playing, but the captains are very open to hear what the team thinks. If the captains choose to not listen to the team, the situation will only go on for the semester because the team can vote someone that is more open and bias into the captain positions for the next semester.
