In the off season we do a lot of footwork drills such as ladder drills, bad drills, jumping rope, W-drills, and running steps. These drills aren't football related but you'll see a big difference in speed and foot speed on the field.

Michael,
Could you elaborate on the drills for those of us who don't know what bad drills, W-drills are?

Thanks

I think what Michael is trying to say is bag drills not bad drills. Bag drills are drills done with hitting bags. These are the bags that coaches use during practice to represent an opposing player. For these drill you would place them flat on the ground about 2 yards apart. Then you would have your players run over them using different techniques, such as high knees, or shuffle through them. W-Drills are drills using cones. You would places cones about 10 yards apart in the shape of a W or two W's. Then you would have your players run to one cone, break their hips down, turn and pivot and then run to the next cone. You can also change the way your get to the cones, such as you could have then sprint to the cone, do high knee to the cones. Those are just a few examples you can do. Here is a website that I found that might help out. http://www.sportscombine.com/thezone/Drills/drills .htm

i think the ladder drill is a great off season drill for foobtall. it works on agilty, quickness, foot work and overall speed. This is a drill that i did, and it worked very well with me.

Using stretch/strength bands is what most college football teams are moving to. They can be used for both speed and strength enhancement and can also be bought at a reasonable price. The number of drills they can be used for are endless and they can really give your team an edge. These bands are also great for injury prevention.
