Our district does not meet the NYS mandate of 120 minutes/week. District administration has already rejected our proposal of daily PE at the elementary buildings (K-4). Each student would have PE daily for 25 minutes. Music and art instruction would remain the same as it currently is. Classroom teachers would lose 5 minutes/day from their instructional time. As I said, our administration already rejected this without looking at it.

Their "solution" is to have us create 5 minute exercise videos that classroom teachers would show daily when they see fit. They (classroom teachers) have already said that this will often not get done, because of their already too full day. They want to know what they will get to give up to be able to add this.

Since this is being dictated to us, and we don't have any choice in the matter, we as a staff think that we will need to create at least 30 of these for each level (K-2, 3-4 and 5-6) to prevent too much repetition. The superintendant thinks that's too many. They have also not addressed the liability issue; since the kids will be active in their classrooms (that are filled with desks and tables...).

We want to have our students appear in the videos, not us. They don't agree with us here either.

As you can guess, we are all very frustrated by this entire process. Does anyone else have some feedback that can help us continue to make our point that this is a "bandaid" and not a long term solution; and that the real solution is to increase the physical education time?
