At the high school level it seems that athletes often get special treatment and do not have to take PE. What are some of our thoughts on this topic?
I am also hearing of some schools allowing athletes that letter for 3 years in high school opt out of PE their senior year.
Thoughts?

I played 3 sports every year in high school and I made sure I had a PE class every quarter. As an athlete I, we love to be physical so why would athletes try to get out of PE. We might have gotten special treatment sometimes but it was in other classes not PE.Senior year was the year students slack the most so PE classes were a must.

I played Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball all four years of high school and still took weights and PE classes throughout the year. I personally think that the teachers and your coaches expected you to be in those classes to stay in shape. At least that is what my experience was. My weight coach and PE teacher pushed the athletes the hardest and expected the most out of them. Athletes should want to participate in PE and weight training because it enhances their performance

I would have to agree with Daniel and Megan, I played 3 sports as well and participated as much as possible in those same classes and weights. I think it can benifical to those student athletes to do both as a way of bettering themselves and making sure they still attend class.

I ran track and field and played soccer during my high school years. For me, PE was a chance to have more fun with physical fitness. Sports teams are more competitive and serious. I always made sure I had a PE class, not only because it was fun, but because I learned a lot too. I learned more about my body and how to stay healthy than I did playing sports. Learning those things helped me get through sports because I understood more of what I needed to do.

I played baseball and basketball all throughout high school and my school let me use those sports for PE credits. I took PE classes my freshman and sophomore years, but didn't take PE my junior and senior year because my sports took care of that. Looking back on it I wish that my school would have forced me to take PE classes those last two years. However, because I didn't have to take PE I was able to TA for my baseball coach/athletic director. I would like to coach baseball and possibly be an athletic director someday, so that was a great opportunity and experience for me. If I had to take PE those two years I wouldn't have been able to do that.

As you all know, participating in varsity sports is not necessarily the same as physical education although they share some of the same arena. There are great values to both when coaching and teaching are done with integrity and purpose. Part of the problem is that many NON-physical education people look at activity as the bread and butter of physical education. It is a slow process but the public is becoming more educated as the quality programs are being highlighted in the media and more importantly, from the information students bring home from quality programs!

I too played varsity sports all three seasons and all four years of high school. I've heard of schools letting athletes skip out on PE which i thought was cool at first, but now that i think of it, it's really not. PE teaches you things for your future health and sports just is teamwork and focuses just on the sport. So I believe athletes should still have to take PE classes and should definitely not get special treatment.

At my high school P.E. was only required 2 year freshman and sophomore year. And sophomore year you got to choose from playing a school sport or taking P.E again. Juniors nor seniors had to take P.E. only if they wanted to. But I think all students at the High School level athlete or not should have to take P.E. all 4 years.

My experience in high school was that the athletes took weight classes while students less active in sports took classes such as aerobics, tae bo or a regular Physical Education class. I know that my high school only required pe for two years, so it seemed that non-athletes opted out after those two years and those involved in high school athletics continued to be a part of the weights programs. I believe that athletes should still have to take their two years of PE regardless of their status, but from my experience most athletes chose to be active in PE all four years.

In my experience in high school I was a 3 sport letter winner and I took PE all 4 years. Having these classes allowed me to better myself in my athletics because of the knoweledge I learned about health and fitnes. I wouldn't have been a good athelete like I was if not for PE in high school. PE classes only will help out an athlete they will not hinder them.

PE is a daily physical activity class that makes sure that you get the necessary physical activity that is necessary to be a healthy person. Sports is an optional activity that we choose to do in our spare time, so athletes cannot complain that physical education is not necessary. Im an athlete but realize that I do sports on my own watch and that physical education is a valuable educational tool to have.

During high school, I participated and lettered in Track and Cross Country. I was also active in a Rock Climbing Team we had at our school, which was more of a club sport. I enjoyed PE class and it was my favorite subject actually. There were a lot of so-called "Jocks" in my PE classes who did not care or participate very much in many of the activities. They would often complain about their previous or upcoming practice and their games as a result to do less work. I can understand some of the reasons, but some of the educators would give the athletes unfair treatment and others would see this and be less motivated to try as hard. Ahtletes should not receive preferential treatment due to being an athlete.

I played football, basketball, and ran track in high school, and I participated in physical education every class. I was always a highly competitive athlete, so my competitive nature would never let me sit out during PE. Anyways, PE was always my favorite class. I would look forward to the days I had PE. Personally, I think physical education should be every athletes favorite class. In my classes, athletes always participate and I would never excuse them from sitting out. Athletes never receive any special treatment in my classes.
