From time to time I work with a student who is currently in 9th grade, bare minimum verbal skills, slight walking problem, multiple mental disabilities, cognitive level of a 5th grade but wants to be treated like he is 4. Needs constant engagement or else he will demonstrate negative behaviors to gain attention and even when continuous positive reinforcement is present, student will rebel physically (biting, kicking, slapping, spitting, throwing things etc) when "work" demands are placed on him. By work I mean anything that involves him doing something someone else wants him to do. Incident reports have been filed and he is being observed by a behavior specialist but school life has not gotten any better for me or other aides. Parents are not helpful, in denial there is a problem, and do not reinforce at home. The student gets his “high” from positive AND negative reinforcement and there is really no punishment that we can legally implement at school that the student won't take with a smile on his face. This is really only the tip of the iceberg. If anyone has any suggestions in motivation techniques or if anyone has worked with a student like this and has found success, all suggestions are welcome. Please weigh in even if you're not sure how exactly to handle the situation. |
