I was recently helping a class with children who had both mental and physical disabilities. I noticed that the activities we were doing seemed to bore the children who had less sever problems while it seemed to be to difficult for others. I question should a teacher further divide the class if this situation occurs??? |

I think the children should be divided by their ability level. I know this isn't always the 'right' thing to do, but if it's not helping some students and is too difficult for others, it's the job of the teacher to adapt the activity and level of difficulty to fit the students. |

How about setting up different stations around the room. Each having a different difficulty and having the children that can do a more difficult activity at the more difficult stations. I feel keeping the students interested in the activity is very important. |

What about setting up stations for skill practice. Students can work individually or in groups depending on how many you have. No matter what the station you can adjust the difficulty for each student. For example. If you are working on a frisbee lesson and you are working on throwing. It is super easy to set up a target course for the kids. Set up several targets large and small , different shapes, hieghts and colors all around the room. When a student that has mastered the basic throw and can easily hit a large target have them try and hit something smaller or back up. I have tried this is a teaching experience in my Intro to Adapted Physical Activity class that has wide skill range and it went over well. Of course this can be any kind of skill work. Good Luck! |
