With this latest technology do you think that it could be used somehow is a physical education class? It is much more advanced than DDR or the Wii system so compare with one or say if you think it could help in PE.

I believe the Wii, Kinect, or even the Playstation Move can be useful teaching tools, as long as they are used appropriately. As for one over the other, the Kinect uses your whole body as the controller, so that may be better, but it also depends on the "game" or software you are using with the system.

Also, game systems can't be an excuse for the educator to take a break and sit back while the students use them.

The Wii's, Kinect's, and Playstation's new teachnological upgrade promotes movement while playing video games but it should not be a substitute for gym class. Gym class is about fine tuning your motor skills and strengthening your body. The game is basically taking the teacher out of the equation. Physical education teachers serve the high schools as movement analyzers and using the gaming console would change the whole gym class atmosphere.

I agree that the Kinect or Wii etc. could definitely be used to benefit students in a physical education class. I think your class would have to be reasonably aged, reasonably small, and responsible enough to handle expensive equipment. (You may have to make judgments on these elements class by class.) I think that the best scenario to use it in would be on days where you have a fitness or heart rate monitor day where students have a choice of what activities to do to simply work on cardio fitness. (This is assuming your school has a fitness facility or program.) Or you could even set up fitness stations in the gym and the kinect could be just one of those stations. In this way, the kinect is not the focus of any lesson but rather a part of fitness in general. Plus, you wouldn't have to buy very many of them. (that could get pretty expensive.)

Let me begin by saying I am overjoyed that the video game companies are making their products active. I have played the Kinect games and the Wii dance games. I have gotten more of a workout form the Wii dance game then from the Kinect games. I understand that both Kinect and Wii now have Zumba. I do think these technologies have a place in physical education class if the district can afford to purchase the equipment. I find these are the things that I can use when I am displaced from the gymnasium. My co teacher and I set up stations in whatever area we are shoved into for class. One of those stations has a technology challenge. The interactive white boards make great playing screens for these games. We have a limited number of game systems so students have to rotate through stations so everyone gets a turn. They do enjoy playing them and they do get a workout. When we have been forced to teach in a classroom this makes for a good alternative. It works better than just sitting around because our teaching space is being used for another purpose.
