I use heart rate monitors in my physical education class to assess students. Sometimes, with the high numbers of students they cross read and then start over. Sometimes they malfunction and sometimes they work great. Has anyone else had troubles with this? What did you do in order to give those students a grade who you could tell was trying but didn't get the required minutes in their zone because of the malfunction of the heart rate monitor? |

This is a problem with many models. We have even had issues with the busses causing interferance. Our soloution was to purchase Sigma watches which eliminate that problem entirely. As far as giving them a grade if you know they were working you give them full credit on a line of trust. |

I have had the same issues as the OP. My heart rate monitors have tend to malfunction at times. I use the hand-help Insta-Pulse, model 107. Kids can get bogus readings, but knowing where their target heart rate is supposed to be, they can set it down and check again. Most of the time they tend to work after a second try. I have also found that some kids are using them wrong by gripping too hard. I have the kids practice each class to find the correct way to use the HRM. Best of Luck! |
