PE teachers are adding simple devices such as stopwatches, heart rate monitors, pedometers, camcorders, and any kind of cardio machine. The list goes on and on. Technology seems to work well with students. Heart rate monitors and pedometers are a great idea for students. This makes them accountable in every class to make sure they are working hard and to their potential. Camcorders are great too. Students can see what they are doing wrong for certain skills and try to make their performances better. We live in a world that is growing with technology. Students adapt well with it, especially considering that they were raised with it.

Physical Education teachers are using technology in their gymnasium to motivate all students. One of the newest and hottest tool is DDR. Students compete and burn calories without realizing how hard they are working. Staying fit should be fun. There is so much technology available to Physical education teachers (HRM, pedometers, computers, PDAs'). These tools can help change students attitudes about physical education class.

I am actually taking a technology class right now and we are learning about many different types of ways to use technology. The list is endless. We are learning a lot about taking videos of the students beause this is important is many ways. They can see themselves, you can show parents, and you can provided them with an idea on how to do a skill. PDA's, DDR, HRM pedometers, stopwatches, sterio sysstems, TV's, the list is endless.

I believe that i am taking a similar class and i find it very useful. The new tools that make our job easier are welcome in my class or possession at anytime.

I also take part in a class dealing with technology! I enjoy the class and feel it will only benefit me as a Physical Education Teacher! Between publisher, interactive powerpoints, word, front page, and the current technologies out there i only see this going in a positive way to interact with students!

I am a student at the University of Texas in the Physical Education Teacher Education program. Currently in one of my classes, we are taking an in depth look into technology in PE. We have a new exer-gaming lab that has many new gaming ideas. DDR and a Wii are two of the gaming systems that are very fun and easily get the kids excited about activity. We also had the privilege of being introduced to the creator of HOPsports. It is a great new piece of technology that is gaining acclaim across the country. The teacher has the controls of a server in which she can choose an activity and there will be a tutorial on the screen. The cool thing about it is the way the activities are presented. They use well known athletes and celebrities to teach skills to students. There are an array of lessons that include specific sports, fitness, dance, and many other things that aren't normally associated with PE. Music can be played and sync to go with the activity. It's a great way to get all you students involved. The teacher can keep an eye on everyone while they are getting instruction from the video. It is very interactive, we did it my class and I found it very enjoyable. The system is pretty pricey but it is something I would recommend all teachers to at least take a look at.

I believe that the use of video is a wonderful way to incorporate technology into our teaching - with the most effective and dramatic results. The key is immediacy of delivery. You need to have the means to allow your student almost instant access to the footage, I.e. I phone, I Pad or similar device. The delay required to download and then upload to a site where the clips can be viewed makes the process difficult.

Hi All,

Dr Grant Abt and I (Dr Lee Nelson) have just released a notational analysis iPhone/iPod Touch app called PLATOSPORT. The app allows you to record up to five 'layers' of information during a match (Player, Location, Action, Time, Outcome - hence the name of the app). Eight sports are supported (American Football, Aussie Rules, Basketball, Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Soccer). However, if you don't need to record where an event occurred then the app can be used with any sport. While the application was principally created for coaches, scouts and performance analysts, perhaps the application could also be pedagogically used within physical education lessons to help your students practically learn about the objective analysis of sporting performance in a fun and applied way.

For further information you can either go to the AppStore or our website for more details.

AppStore link:

App website:

Cheers,

Lee and Grant

Years ago I won a grant from the General Mills company to help improve fitness at the school I was currently teaching at. I purchased a class set of DDR for the Wii. The biggest issue that I found was the time it took to set up and take down the units. Our Elementary PE classes were 30 minutes in length, so every minute was essential. I think the DDR was an awesome way to motivate kids, but it would have been better suited for an area where we could have kept it set up all the time.

As far as other technologies that I have used, they include heart rate monitors, pedometers, video clips, and stopwatches. The heart rate monitors have been excellent at helping kids know if they are in the target heart rate zone or not, though I find having them take their pulse manually also an excellent option.

I also use video on a regular basis to demonstrate how things are done. Kids get more out of seeing themselves or peers performing the tasks.

A newer technology that just arrived at my school is called "ActiVotes". It is a system where I can ask my kids questions and they key in an answer on the keypad. It will quickly show me if they are grasping the concepts or not.

One of the biggest downfalls of technology in the gym is making sure the equipment doesn't get broken. I use my computer to record scores as we fitness test, but you definitely have to be careful with the placement of it.

I am sure there are many more technologies available and with proper funding we all could use more technology in our gyms!

We are currently using multimedia carts. We use our laptops to show videos or powerpoint presentations via a large screen and projector. We use it for aerobics, dance, step aerobics, tae bo and youtube to show dance dance games.
