Should the focus in physical education classes be shifted from team sports
to lifetime and leisure activities? It is a well known fact that as
children get older there are not as many opportunities for them to be
involved in team sports therefore why is the focus in physical education
classes based on these activities?

I teach at a high school and our focus is on lifetime and leisure activities, however we still play some team sport that the student reall enjoy like flag football and floor hockey, just to name a few. Physical fitness is a must for all grades.

I think the focus needs to be on life/leisure activities, sports, and fitness. The focus can not be solely on life/leisure activities because most of these activities require very little cardiovascular workout. The focus can not be solely on sports because there is much more to P.E. than sports. The fitness can not be solely on fitness because some kids will dread going to P.E. class. A combination of all three contributes to the students learning about different domains of P.E. rather than simply thinking of P.E. a one dimensional thing.

Does anyone have any fun cardio relays for high school? Our facility is limited to a large asphalt parking lot. I've come up with a couple of relays and most of the students seemed to get into the action, despite their initial moans and groans. Some students won't expend much energy when we're running or running/walking our "track" that I measured off around the perimeter of the lot (11 laps are a mile), but they move a bit faster when their team is counting on them. Any ideas?
