I am currently a student in college, seeking my degree in PE. I am in a course where we are learning different activities such as golf, bowling, bocce, and croquet. With the new trend of teaching activites that can be enjoyed throughout life, should these sports be included in a high school setting? I think they are fun, but the students might be bored with them and want to do something more active and competitive. Any opinions? |

I am also a PE major seeking my degree, I think that in high school it would be a good idea to get students to learn more about lifetime activities. I know we are learning this stuff in college now, but i definetly wish I would have learned more in high school. I also think that these activities give other students, not just the super athletic ones, a chance to shine and do well. |

Stephanie: That's good thinking on your part. Curriculum should be designed for the maximum number of students, not (just) the physically gifted. Knowing how you feel about your high school experience, I'm sure that you will provide your students with an improved and more meaningful curriculum. Jeremy: Lifetime activities include power walking (get a pedometer), aquatics, dance, cycling, skating, skiing, aerobics of various types, martial arts of various types, outdoor education (geo-cashing, orienteering, camping, hunting and fishing, snow shoeing, skiing, cross country skiing and on and on.) These are exciting and enjoyable activities that kids can continue to participate for many many years. THAT'S what we shoudl be teaching to our students. If you teach a team sport, offer the competitive side of it in three levels: Those who want and enjoy elevated levels of competition, those who prefer a more mid-range semi-compitive experience and those who prefer to spend time developing skills or playing individual contests (horse, around the world, etc.) Your teaching must address the developmental and social levels of all of your students. Takes time and planning, but it reaches all kids and makes the job a lot more interesting and enjoyable. To be the best teacher possible, you must continue to learn every day that you're on the job, right to the very last day. Why else would you be doing this? Joe Herzog, Fresno Unified 1965-2006 |

I am currently a PE major also. I took a lifetime activites class this past summer. I love the idea of "lifetime" activity. I believe one of the main purposes in PE is to guide the students in living a healthy lifestyle not just while in school but as they get older and for the rest of their lives. We are not going to be able to play team sports like basketball and football all of our lives so I feel it is important for everyone to learn these lifetime sports like golf, running, swimming, archery etc. Just like Stefanie had said this will also be beneficial for the students who do not like team sports and are more individual. When I get a job, I plan on making a cirriculum that incorporates more than just the basic team sports so everyone can experience new things and things that will beneifit them for the rest of their lives. |

I am currently a PE major too, and there is a class that I took that covered lifetime activites. It is a great class for all students going to be a teacher because it helps you realize great activites that you can teach your students so they know what type of activities to do so they can maintain a healthy lifestyle all their lives. The activities you learn to teach are bowling, golf, and archery. When I get a job I will definitaly incorporate a lesson that teachs my students these skills so everyone can try and learn these activites that they can do throughout their lives. |
