Do you think that we should give out of class assignments in PE classes?

When it comes to homework in PE, I do not believe written or out of class assignments are necessary. We need to stress to our students the importance of physical activity and for them to stay active not only in their PE classes, but also outside of school. Taking up any time to "collect" homework or assign homework is just taking away from their activity time. Health is the class where homework may be necessary because that is where you go more in detail about how physical acivity is healthy for you.

I do give students activity logs to complete (pedometer steps/day), Number of min. per day at level two (active aerobics) during a week. There is nothing wrong with reinforcing the concepts you are teaching outside of class. Physical activity is not physical education.

I believe that Cheryl has the right idea. Perhaps our most important duty is to teach an active lifestyle. If part of that is to assign a student a student certain activities that he/she have to fit in during the day, or especially on weekends, that provides a learning experience for the child.

I learned, somewhat slowly, to limit the written work I sent home, basically to what Cheryl has described in her note. That is wholly appropriate in an educational context. If we do anything as physical educators, teaching parents, administrators and such the difference between physical ACTIVITY and physical EDUCATION, we will have accomplished much.
