If an athlete misses class or a student has to leave early for an appointment, should it be mandatory to make up class? If it is not at home, but maybe by walking/jogging for 20 minutes. Math and english homework needs to be made up if a student is abscent, should we make these rules for PE as well? |

I do think it should but there is that chance they might lie about it, and i guess that's dependent on the student, but i agree with the make up part unless there is only work to be done in class. |

I believe that if an athlete misses class, it's excused and doesn't have to be made up..I mean athlete = sporting event!! So that person is going to be physically active for that day anyway. However, for an appointment, I do believe that the class missed should DEFINITELY be made up because most appointments can be made at nearly any time of the day so if they chose to make it during a PE class then they can make up for it some other time of the day. |

I think if a student misses a class that they need to make up the activity, however if the student is an athlete, it should be excused. The student is getting their physical activity in the sport in which they are participating. |

We have a policy that any student who is absent or not dressed loses the same participation points for that day. Either way, they did NOT participate so they do not receive the points. We have plenty of options available to make up any class that was missed. Every student has a study hall and with permission and a pass from a PE teacher, they may come down during that time and participate with whatever class is taking place, even if it is not their grade level. We also have 'Make-up PE' Periods each day that are posted in the locker rooms and students are fully aware of when they are available. Also, every day after 8th period, our school has something called Activity Period from 2:30 - 3:00 and that is when students have the option to stay after and make up classwork, tests, get tutored, etc. and the PE teachers are available at that time as well. The policy stands for everyone whether they were sick, had an appointment, missed because of a sport, or skipped class. It does not matter. They weren't there participating in the lesson or game that was being taught. If athletes were to be excused for having to leave early for a competition because it is 'exercise', that would be justifying them not having to take PE at all during their season because they would be 'exercising' after school for their practice too. Athletics are extra and they are a choice a student makes ON TOP of their regular classes. |

I agree with Andrea. If a student is absent or not dressed for physical education class they should lose points for the day. Making up PE should also be an option so they can get their physical activity in that they missed when they were absent or did not dress. Athletes should only be excused from having to make up physical education if they were absent because they were at an athletic event. |
