Many people have different views on this issue: should athletes be exempt from vigorous physical activities when they are in mid-season? At first I believed that athletes would not have a problem being active in class and that they are already in shape to do so. It should be a breeze for them. But when I was on my high school volleyball team, I started seeing the other side of the issue. On the day of an important section match, my teacher made me participate in the mile run, along with weight lifting activites. I was forced to give 100% effort or else I would be given detention. That night at my game, I was sore and was not able to perform at my highest level. Should athletes be exempt from strenuous activity in class on the day of their sporting events? |

Your teacher was either very anal or an idiot. If I taught HS PE I would be very aware that my varsity athletes were already committed to health and vigorous activity. To demand that my requirements were absolutely neccassary on a game day would be asinine. I would USE the varsity athletes in a way to encourage my other students to get better and learn to love games and sports. I mean its a perfect opportunity to see how you compare to a supposedly skilled athlete. Sounds win win to me. |

I believe that student athletes should be exempt from strenous activity on the day of their sporting events. Teachers should be aware of the sporting events and take into consideration that this person will be physically active later in the day. I believe that the work they miss however should be made up on another day. To make students run a mile and weight train on a day of their sporting event in my opinion is ridiculous. |
