Grading in PE seems like it has various scales. Shouldn't there be one grading scale that is universal for PE in America. This would make everyones grading more equal or balanced.

Stephen, I agree that there needs to be more standardization in our grading, across the country. First of all, grading should be content/knowledge based; it should have components on improvement and participation and social skills. Grading should never be based on a child's physical ability, i.e. how fast he/she can run a mile, how many pushups can be done, etc. My low per centage of fast twitch muscle fibers dooms me to many of the tests which are still given in many schools.

While it may be possible to standardize grading to a large degree, there remains the need to retain local control of the means and methods to reach those grading criteria. I would not use precisely the same criteria to grade a student in a small rural town in the San Joaquin Valley as I would, say in Rancho Palos Verdes in Southern California.

Make your grading knowledge based then adjust to the background and experiences that influence the learning potential of your students. Test them on what YOU have taught them. That is not to say that I want to make it any easier, just fair.

I base my middle school students' grades on 3 things: Respect, Effort and Sportsmanship. I agree that ability grading is not appropriate but I have not seen any ideas for a national or universal grading system that I agree with.

We use a rubic as our grading system. The maximum number of points a student can achieve daily is 5. If the following occur the student will receive 4 pts UNSAFE ACTS,POOR SPORTMANSHIP,BREAKING CLASS RULES OR GAME RULES, ARGUING, TARDY OR DISMISSED FROM CLASS.
If the following occur the student will receive 3 pts. REDUCED EFFORT, PUT DOWNS, OBSCENITIES, AND FIELD TRIPS.
If the following occur the stdent will receive 2 pts.DO NOT CHANGE BUT PARTICIPATES
If the following occur the student will receive 1 pt. EXCUSED ABSENT, AND NURSE'S EXCUSE
If the following occur the student will receive 0 pts. NON DRESSED AND NON ACTIVE, UNEXCUSED ABSENCE, INSUBOARDINATE, FIGHTING, DESTROYING SCHOOL PROPERTY, CUTTING CLASS, AND DISCRIMINARY COMMENTS.
i AGREE THE GRADE SHOULD NOT BE BASED ON SKILL.
