When high students do not change for p.e. at your school, are they still required to participate? I've been subbing this past year and most schools I have been to still have the students participate. I see pros and cons with this and was wondering what everyone else does. I would also like to know at what point do they fail when they don't dress? |

At my high school, the students purchase uniforms as a requirement. If they "forget" their uniform the first time per nine weeks I give them a rental uniform for free. Each time after that is 25 cents per shirt/short rental. After three rentals per nine weeks, an after school detention is given. This has worked well for me and not dressing is never an issue. |

My view on this topic is simple: As a 39 year old father, I don't "suit up" to go throw the baseball with my son, play frisbee catch or shoot some hoops so why do we need a specific uniform for this in p.e.? What is necessary due to safety is a decent shoe for the designated activity. But if someone is in jeans, a shirt and dress shoes, for example, are you telling me they can't participate in recreational badminton, volleyball or paddleball? Encourage physical activity whenever possible and quit worrying sweating the small stuff. Common sense should apply and not the fear of lawsuits. We are smart enough to prevent a female in heels to play soccer, but don't let regular clothes get in the way of recreational participation. |

I think dressing out for a vigorous PE class is common sense but I also agree with Jim. If a kid has tennis shoes and casual clothes I will want them to participate. IF dressing out is required then they lose x amount of points toward their grade if they dont. A negligible amount if it is me as the teacher. |
