I understand that swimming is a part of most if not all PE curriculums nationwide. My highschool taught swimming in 7th grade. My question is when is the best age/grade to teach swimming fundamentals? What happens if a student has never taken previous lessons or isn't at a level to feel comfortable enough in the class? |

At my school, we learned to swim in fourth grade and I don't think that it was too early. The class was broken into 3 groups: beginners, intermediate, and advanced. That way, the beginners could slowly get used to being in the water, the intermediates could work on perfecting strokes and learning new things, and the advanced went over perfecting strokes. This way, everyone went at their own pace and everyone seemed to gain something from it. |

In our school district, all students from grade 2 through 8 are required to take swimming. Detailed records of the students progress are kept and upgraded each year. Once students get to high school, they are given the choice continuing to take swim. Our 2 - 8 curriculum is based on instructional swim, where our high school curriculum is based on the enjoyment of water through activities such as water games and kayaking. www.brockportpe.org

I was in the sixth grade when they first introduced swimming in class. The class was split into two groups: beginners and intermediate. The beginners would learn the fundamentals of the strokes, and the intermediate students learn more advanced strokes as well as diving techniques. Also, at anytime beginners could take a skill test to advance into the intermediate group. |
