Cory: Fun and competition are not mutually exclusive, but there are different kinds of competition. The term "fun" lends itself to play or unstructured activity, so for that purpose I prefer the term "enjoyable." The most valuable type of competition is internal/self directed.
Teaching skills in which a student can measure or see improvement is a prime motivator. Constantly pitting kids against each other is win-lose games has far less value. Not to say that a game that has a winner/loser is not appropriate, but mostly so for older kids and offered in situations where kids have the option of "competitive", "active" or "skill based" games. It took me some time to learn that because I'm a very competitive person. Co-operative games such as Project Adventure, SPARK and the like offer the best of both worlds, enjoyment and competition that is group based so that no one child is singled out as a failure, or inept, or unskilled. They also help develop the critical thinking process. Individual and dual activities allow for kids to be internally competitive, to set goals for themselves and to see themselves in a realistic fashion.

The goal, or one of many, is to challenge kids and to encourage them to challenge themselves to bigger and better things. Your job is to help them understand what is realistic in both the short term as well as the long term, and to show them the various methods of reaching their goals.
