I was just wondering if the gymnasium is being used and the weather is bad outside what is a good activity to do in a regular sized classroom for P.E. class? I can't think of any good games to play or activities to do that would keep students physically active or increase their heart rate. |

When I need to teach in the classroom I sometimes lead the students in a sort of aerobics session. I ask them for their favorite sports and then we simulate those moves. For example, if a student says "basketball" I would have everyone pretend to dribble and then jump straight up and pretend to shoot. I would cue them "dribble, dribble, dribble, shoot". We would do about 10 of those and then move on to another sport. Another classroom activity that I do is cup stacking. It works great at the desks. |

One thing that you could do that might be different is to do a "sit and be fit" kind of exercise. There are plenty of exercises online about movements that you can do while sitting, or with the use of the chair. These can vary from strength exercises to stretching exercises. I think that this would be a good activity also because it would keep the children calm and organized in such a small space. |

Alex, first of all try to kick those people out of the gym. As the physical education instructor you have a right to the gym first. Bring that up and make it school policy. That being said, there are times when you can't use the gym or the field so try not to focus on heart rate because that is difficult but instead use the time to do activities that are more beneficial to the space you have. The times that I have to use the computer lab/library we do arm wrestling, leg wrestling, or I have them create their own bocce balls out of crumpled up paper and be play Bocce. None of these of heart rate ideal but focus on strength and strategy. |
