With the growing focus of lifetime health and fitness in physical education there is a lot more talk about using equipment during P.E. for physical fitness. Are they many high schools out there that have classes that involve strength and resistance training, or is this thought still somewhat ahead of its time? |

At our High School, we offer a selective program where students are able to select the specific activities that they participate in. As part of this program, we offer classes in 1) personal fitness 2) Intro to weight traing 3) Advanced weight training 4) Power Training 5) Cardio Training & 6) Cardio-Yoga & Pilates. This is in addition to other other curriculum which includes activities such as snowboarding, ice skating, mountain biking, adventure programming and more. Our Fitness curriculum is backed up by having a state-of-the-art fitness center that is open to students every other day for 85 minutes during the school day as well as after school every day for over two hours. On a normal day, over 80 students participate at any given time in our afterschool program. |

I'm a sophomore at Slippery Rock University now but at my high school we had cardio and strength training. In the advanced health class we participated in it every class. However, in the average PE class we did it maybe once a month! As a student i recommend it and enjoyed having it in the classroom! |

At my high school, a cardio lab was built. I know for myself as an active student I enjoyed the class, but I also know that a majority of my classmates dreaded having to take the class that actually involved getting sweaty. I recommend having it if you have plenty of students who like to become involved in the physical education classes. |

At my high school, a few of the teachers would encourage movement right before a test or quiz to get the blood flowing and to ease the tension in the room |

At my high school, there was a specific class you could take for strength and resistance training. I enjoyed the class and believe it should be offered in all high schools |

At our high school we incorporate a 2 week fitness unit each 9 weeks. Our units are: weight lifting, aerobics, fitness stations and walk/jog (usually in the spring when we can get outside). Although the students view this as punishment, we reinforce the benefits of these units and try to get them to realize the importance of it all! A few students will let us know they enjoy these units better than the others, but the majority of the students complain about them! |

At our high school we incorporate fitness throughout the year. Each nine weeks we include a 2 week fitness unit of some sort. We do aerobics, weight lifting, fitness stations and a walk/run unit. Our budget is limited so we don't have a lot of equipment to work with either. Many of the kids complain only because it requires more effort than they want to put forth. It is sad that they feel like we are punishing them when we make them participate in these activities a mere 8 weeks out of the entire school year (36 weeks). |

At the high school I teach out we try to incorporate cardio and strength training more and more each year. We have fitness units, we do different aerobic activities such as yoga, zumba, cardio kickboxing, etc. We also have weight room units where we try and focus on the importance of strength training. |
