When choosing teams in Physical Education classes, what is the most easiest and fair way to go about it? I'm not an advocate for choosing captains because I always feel bad for the last few people to get picked. If anyone has a more productive way of picking teams, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you! |

Since choosing captains and having them pick teams in physical education tends to be more of a “popularity contest,” there are much better ways to separate the class into teams. One quick and easy way is to have the students count off. The number, to which the students count, depends on how many teams you want for your lesson. After all students have a number, combine all the ones together, all the twos together, and so on. Another way is to have the students quickly choose a partner. After they have their partner, have the entire class line up with the partners facing each other. The students on the right side will be one team, and the students on the left side will be the other team. Also, some educators choose to create teams or groups themselves to attain fair teams. Another idea would to discretely have four students create the teams for the entire class. They could come in after school to keep this process as covert as possible. At the designated time, these students would separate the students in their class into the most even, fair teams as possible to foster competitive play and success. After the teams were created, the four “captains” would randomly select what team they would be a member of. |

Usually when a teachers allows the students to pick teams themselves the students will gather together with their friends. An easier way to approach picking teams is have the class get into pairs. Then tell the pairs to have one partner sit down. So then all the standing students are on one team and all the sitting students are on another team. |

Another suggestion would be to incorporate the picking of teams into the warm-up. Have the kids walk quickly in a circle and tell them that when you call out a number, they must quickly get into a group of that size. Maybe start with calling out 5 just to get the kids thinking they're random numbers. Eventually, call out the number of the actual group size you want and that will become the team or group. You won't be able to do this all the time because the kids will see how it works but that is when you could modify the stipulations or just choose another method for picking teams. This is just the suggestion I had that wasn't already mentioned. |
