I am a physical education teacher candidate and also a martial artist. I have always thought that it would be cool to have taken some martial arts in physical education class and I think now that it would be really awesome to teach it to my classes someday. However, I am not sure what the role of martial arts in physical education is allowed to be. Can a physical education teacher get away with teaching martial arts in today's society? Could one perhaps at least teach self defense in their physical education classes? I just am not familiar with most public school regulations and would really appreciate any knowledge or experience that any of you may have as to whether teaching martial arts is allowed and to what extent. Thank you! |

I have never known of any physical education programs that include martial arts, but it is certainly an interesting idea. I agree with you that teaching self-defense might be a more reasonable goal. However, even then schools typically have very strict regulations on physical contact. Even teaching self defense could be seen by some as encouraging the need for violence. It would be very hard to get any type of martial arts or self-defense program approved in the public school setting, but it would certainly be neat if it did happen. |
