Through my own experiences in physical education, I think it is a good idea for boys and girls to be split up in separate classes. I believe at the elementary level it is okay for them to have mixed classes because a lot of the curriculum is general movement ed, and physical activity. However, when children reach the middle school age there is a definite difference in how boys and girls play sports. The boys tend to be more rough and learn about different sports than girls would. Girls could do units on softball, field hockey and gymnastics, where boys would do lessons on football, baseball, and wrestling. Not only are the activities different, but middle school is the age where hormones and puberty kick in, and kids have strong emotions about fitting in and being popular. What does everyone think on this topic? Should Physical education classes be Co-Ed? If so, do you think there are ages or certain lessons that they should be divided for? |

In my junior high and high school physical education classes, boys and girls were always in the same class. Our PE classes were a whole period, so 84 minutes and we also had a male and female teacher. As a whole, both girls and boys did the fitness based lesson the first half of the class, then when it was game time, the boys and girls were split and went with the same sexed teacher. I think this worked very well. The more athletic girls ran and did sit ups and push ups with the boys, and then could play games with just the girls where they weren't rough housed. I also think having the boys around is kind of a motivator to the girls. The boys were always impressed when there was a girl who participated and gave full effort. Also vice versa, the boys wanna do well in front of the girls. Especially at the middle school/junior high level. I personally think that physical education should be co-ed. |
