Ok, I have been teaching P.E. now for 8 years. Each year, it gets worse and worse about kids who just don't care. It doesn't matter what activity I have, they don't want to participate or go so slowly there is no way they are getting their heart rates up. I feel a lot of it has to do with a change in teachers. The newer teacher has been here 2 years. He has a wealth of experience as he retired from another school. However, he does things differently than the last teacher. I have tried to continue on with our curriculum and have made changes, but things seem to keep getting worse. I even went to a choices when we are in our small gym of weight lifting, fitness equipment or the sport activity. I know in PE things are changing and more is about being fit and active instead of games. So, I have decided I am going to go to a fitness unit for a while to get kids active again. Does anyone have one they would share. We have used stations but find h.s. kids dislike them greatly. We have heart rate monitors and used them for 3 years. The last 2 years, we haven't as the other teacher doesn't see the need. I think they help tremendously even though kids hate wearing them. I'm just frustrated and really starting to hate teaching P.E. I came here looking for suggestions as I am seriously thinking about a career change. I just hate not being able to get kids to do activities. |

I may not be a big help but i think going with a fitness unit is a great idea. you could explain the great benefits of being active and staying active. everyday you could have a different healthy tip about being physically active. as far as getting students to participate you could disguise the fitness unit with fitness games and not just stations. i no when kids see stations they get turned off and don't wanna do something. but if u find a couple of great fitness games such as obstacle courses inside, or outside. they could even come up with their own it groups and challenge each other on them. |

Try using some cooperative, challenging, thinking activities where they have to solve a problem. Send then out on a scavenger hunt with items specific to a unit you have done. Geocaching, orienteering, ultimate frisbee/football/whatever...Think outside the box. What age level is this you are teaching? |
