I know a lot of people and professors at my school say that "if you play dodgeball in PE, you should go up on the wall of shame." Personally I think dodgeball is one of the better activities you can do in PE but I also understand that it can single out students. Maybe not the traditional game of dodgeball but maybe some different versions. Is dodgeball in Physical Education really that harmful to students in an emotional sense? |

Andrew, The best criteria I have heard for not playing dodgeball is that is "promotes violent behavior of the strong against the weak" We have enough domestic and child abuse in this country. It is perfect environment to support bullying |

Both of your points are valid. If a game involves balls being thrown at other students with the intention to bully or harm anyone in any way then it should not be done. This is how I think the traditional image of "dodgeball" has been perceived. However, when reality has you confined to one gym with fifty or more students all winter, I believe there is a safe and fun way to get the kids moving...we call it "Watusi". This game is based on knocking a plastic bowling pin over before the other team does. We use small gatorskin balls and stress safety. Other versions of this game could be developed too. The kids request this game frequently and are amazed at how much they sweat (get a good workout) while not even realizing it till the end of class because they are having so much fun... and at the expense of no one's feelings |

Personally, I think there is a place for dodgeball in PE. However, I feel it should be optional for students to participate. Where I teach, we have a weight room that is attached to our fitness room where dodgeball is played. Students that opt out of dodgeball can go and lift, ride bikes, etc. It is a great workout and you can play several types of d-ball games. I've had the students wear HRM's while playing and most of them are in their target zone for most of the period. |
