As a part of some of my college courses, we observe various health & physical education classes around the area. We recently visited two high schools, and I was quite disturbed due to the lack of enthusiasm by the teachers. It seemed as if they expect their students to be apathetic towards the class, so they basically do an activity to pass the time - such as indoor softball. The teacher just stood by home plate the entire class period, barely engaged with the students, and made no attempt to motivate the girls standing in the outfield clustered in a circle chit-chatting. Is this a common trend among middle and high school physical education teachers?

Hopefully it is being phased out of the classroom.

I recently observed a high school PE class and it was the same way. The teacher just stood off to the side and no engaging of students took place. At any level, I feel that the teacher level of enthusiasm and engagement has a strong correlation with the culture and climate of the class. If they are involved with a positive spirit, then that enthusiasm is contagious in a positive manner. Based off my high school observation, however, the enthusiasm can be contagious in the negative manner as well.

This is very disappointing to hear. Unfortunately it is very true for many teachers, not just teachers in the field of Physical Education. I agree, I feel the students feed off of the teachers energy. If the teacher has low energy, the students are likely to enjoy being active. Very sad!!
