I taught a non-traditional PE course this fall, which focused on adventure, team building, and cultural activities. I found that the students enjoyed activities that they can participate in for life. One of the most exciting units was kayaking. I was able to bring in kayaks to our pool. Another unit the students enjoyed was winter camping/backpacking/hiking. Again, I found equipment for everyone and I taught them LNT, oreinteering (urban/wilderness), packing bags, setting up camp, cooking, etc. The students and I found it very valuable to teach from a non-traditional approach because everyone was successful at something and they were learning something new. |

I would agree with this post. I am currently enrolled in such a class. We just returned from a weekend backpacking trip which was both a physically challenging and enjoyable trip. I wonder what kind of liability issues would arrise though with teaching it to highschoolers or below. |
