While I was in high school the gym teachers always played music while the students warmed-up and for most of the class. At first it seemed like a great idea, but then it seemed like a distracation after awhile. I think music warm-ups may be more appropriate for elementary school students. Just wanted some feedback and thoughts!

Lauren, Music has a profoundly positive effect on the brain. I've noticed the tendency to use only popular/contemporary music, in the majority. I opened class with jazz because we came in and immediately started group warmups. Then we went to rock'n roll (old time and some newer), then some contemporary and always closed with classical (Baroque), while we did recovery heart rates. Variety is the spice of life, so mixing your music to suit the portion of the class requires some study of each type of music. There is some very uptempo classical that works during activity periods.

Physical activity, music and language development are all rhythm based, so mixing the three does wonderful things for kids of all ages.
