I have recently had my interest in brain-based research sparked, specifically in its application to movement, fitness, and physical education. If any of you have some great references that you are willing to share so that I might continue studying in this area, I would appreciate it. I know there is a great deal of information out there. I am looking for some very concise content to use and share, perhaps in the development of an inservice for K-8 physical educators. Thanks!

Dear Michael,
Check out Jean Blaydes Madigan's book, Thinking On Your Feet, and her website. I think the url is actionbasedlearning.com.
Also, I think their is another website called braingym.org or braingym.com. I hope this helps.

Michael: Try "The User's Guide to The Brain", by Harvard neurophysiologist Dr. John Ratey. It is most enlightening and really opened my eyes. Chapter 4 "Movement" will give you a solid understanding of the relationship between physical activity and it's role and potential in brain growth, development and learning potential. I ordered mine from Borders Book Store, in Fresno. It was $16.00 and worth every penny of it. Joe Herzog

Dr. John Ratey has just published a new book entitled "SPARK The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain." It is a must-read for every human being and especially physical education teachers. He also has a podcast on Itunes where you can hear an interview with him talking about the book. I believe the podcast is on the "Brain Science" podcast...at any rate you can do a search and find it pretty easily. I bought a copy for my principal as well....now if I can just find her some time to read it!!!

I agree. SPARK is a must read for any physical education teacher.

I would encourage every group of district physical educators to pitch in and purchase an appropriate number of copies of Dr. Ratey's "SPARK" and present them to your school board members and your superintendent and perhaps your district's director of curriculum.

Until we provide evidence to district administration that quality physical education programs are to their benefit (and to the kids as well), it's going to a long and difficult struggle to enact positive change. It's more than worth the time and effort and whatever modest expense is incurred. We've donated about 10 copies, in Fresno and all the responses have been positive.

And, of course, Matt is quite correct. EVERY physical educator should be required to read "SPARK."

I gave a copy to my administrator and I think it was one of the reasons that she supported the upstart for our Action Based Learning Lab that incorporates some of Jean Blaydes-Madigan's curriculum and some of the parts of Brain Gym. We are seeing positive results with our students who are in our group and we hope that the testing this spring demonstrates this as well. I would agree - SPARK should be a must read for PE instructors as well as PE majors!!!

Thank you all for posting resources on brain based education. Oddly enough, youtube.com has been a wonderful resource for understanding an implementing aspects of brain based education in the classroom. Specifically, I have learned opposing views on brain based learning, studies done about this type of learning, and ideas for using movement and the benefits for students.

This is a topic that is should be forefront in defining the future of teaching. With teacher evaluation coming to a head, maybe this will encourage teachers to rethink how they provide information to their students. It's well worth the look at youtube..."wholebrainteaching" which lends itself to the site:
www.wholebrainteaching.com
Check it out and I'd love to hear how others perceive it's use in the classroom.
