I was looking for other opinions on music in P.E. How do you feel or do you play music in class that the kids want to hear?

I am retired, but I played music everyday, and most of the time during class. It can be soothing, motivating, stimulating, calming, depending on what you play. I used all kinds of music. I purchased a multi disc player with a remote. It was great.

When I have a free play day I bring out my boom box with my JRFH music and kids jumprope, hula-hoop or dance to my music. Some kids that hate to exercise or run will turn on when the music starts.

I constantly use music in the gym. I hook my ipod to my boombox and use on a daily basis. As for allowing children to play music they want, I encourage them to get me the music on CD (so I can create a class playlist). However I tell them that it has to be appropriate for school, and I reserve the right to say no to a particular song. I try to use different types to expose them to various music genres (Reggae, Classic Rock, New Age, Techno).

Do any of you have any good suggestions on a CD player?

At my school the CDs we have require 4 D batteries. They run out after about 4 hours of use and the volume on our CD player is really low. It makes working on the PACER test very difficult.

I like the idea of music for the class. I think the students enjoy class more with the music.

I would like to say that I just taught a lesson last Thursday (03/12/09) and we used music for the entire class period, throughout the warm-up and the lesson! The music of course was paused during instructions and station switching but my partners and I got very positive feedback from our teacher during our "after-teaching discussion".

We all decided that the music helped the students to stay on the level we wanted and needed them to be at to perform the activities we had planned for the day.

The best music to use is one with an upbeat that will keep the kids tapping their feet while focusing on the task at hand. During our lesson, when a new song would start, I would hear the students in my class say "Oh I like this song!" or "This is my jam!"

Music is a wonderful thing and I think it should be incorporated into physical education as much as possible!!

I really enjoyed reading the post prior to this one when it comes to music and physical education. The only problem I could ever see coming out of this would be the language in the music. If it previewed before students and it passes the test, so speak…what is the harm? It typically only motivates the student to be more active. You might think it would be harder to motivate students by just pressing a play button, but think about how much more your personal workout improves when you have music available to you. I actually find it hard to work out without my iPod. I think it makes the atmosphere more upbeat. As mentioned, preview the lyrics!

I hear music coming from the gym during the day. PE teachers in my middle school were using music while students were competing in volleyball during the class.

I have lots of kids that start moving much better when the music comes on. THEY LOVE dancing to
the Korean thing Gangham Style.
