INCORPORATING PE: With all the recent budget plans in education, it is inevitable that some districts will have to let employees go. I hope that the students will not be deprived of an efficient PE program. Physical education can be incorporated into the classroom with the use of pedometers and even learning through movement. However, core subjects such as history and science can also be incorporated into physical education class. I recently learned how to teach students geography by standing up and using your own body as a map. My question is, how else can school subjects be incorporated into PE? It is important for PE instructors to prove their importance in the school district as well. Find out more in the forum.
GRADING: Im a Health and Phys Ed major at Slippery Rock University and I've often wondered how to go about grading once I get my own classroom. I definitely know its not fair to grade the basketball star the same way as someone who struggles with activities. I was curious as to ways different teachers grade in hope to find my own way. UNIFORMS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES: I agree with the uniforms proposition, but I also have to wonder how the school district/ pe teacher expect students who can't afford these uniforms to pay. Most school districts will not fork out the money for the uniforms because it is a choice and not something that needs to happen in PE. I know there are grants, but is there one that supports buying uniforms for students? If so, which ones? Do you really think that uniforms is going to stop all the judging in physical education of less skilled kids? Yes it will eliminate the trouble of making a dress code but is it really fair to mandate uniforms for everyone when not everyone can afford them? Please share in the forum.
FITNESS CENTER DAYS: In high school, we would go to the fitness center 2 days a week. Any thoughts on this? It really helped out the kids with building self-esteem plus getting them in shape. Some of the kids didnt want to participate in games in the gymnasium but when we went to the fitness center, they would participate like crazy! Even if all they did was walk/run on the treadmill the whole time. I think this is good for P.E class. Please share in the forum.
ABSTINENCE ONLY VS SAFE SEX IN HEALTH: I personally believe that safe sex practices should be taught, but I know that some school still require an abstinence based curriculum. What do you belive should be taught, and do you have any suggestions on how to push for a safe sex curriculun in an abstinence only school? Please share in the forum.
TWITTER?: Hey, I am currently in a Technology in physical education class. We are trying out lost of new and different technologies to use in classrooms in the future. One of our current assignments is to learn how to, and use twitter over a 30 day period. I was hoping for some ideas for good classroom uses for twitter. Let me know what you think! PLATOSPORT: Dr Grant Abt and I (Dr Lee Nelson) have just released a notational analysis iPhone/iPod Touch app called PLATOSPORT. The app allows you to record up to five 'layers' of information during a match (Player, Location, Action, Time, Outcome - hence the name of the app). Eight sports are supported (American Football, Aussie Rules, Basketball, Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Soccer). However, if you don't need to record where an event occurred then the app can be used with any sport. While the application was principally created for coaches, scouts and performance analysts, perhaps the application could also be pedagogically used within physical education lessons to help your students practically learn about the objective analysis of sporting performance in a fun and applied way. ONLINE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES: I have heard a couple of times now that some schools are offering online physical education classes. I do not know much about this but, by the sounds of it to me it is obsurd.Other than for content knowledge, I don't know how else this could be beneficial to a student. Computer's can not make up for a person's participation in physical activity. I was wondering if anyone had more information on this, or any opinions? Please share in the forum.
