ABSTRACT

During this session participants will be introduced to a variety of orienteering events that can be used across the K-12 health and fitness program. While we will have a series of events set up each participant will only be able to negotiate a couple of them within the time frame provided. So, bring a friend and split up among the different events. The events will begin with "photo" orienteering where participants develop ability to recognize terrain and easily recognizable sites along the course. We will then move to navigating a course using landmarks which participants will recognize within the environment as the control points. As we progress to using a map participants will begin to navigate a course by recognizing control points designated on a "features" map of the course. Finally, we will provide several levels of events for those who are more and less skilled at using a compass to negotiate a course.
